VICTIMS OF A HOME IMPROVEMENT SCAM GET HELP
As seen on NBC 10 News!

Collegeville, PA., June 27, 2002--Bob and Linda Piotrowski took out a loan and paid a contractor almost $7,000 to do some much needed remodeling on their Collegeville home. Months later, they were out of thousands of dollars, and because the contractor didn't come back to finish the work, they were also out of hope of ever getting it done. The Piotrowskis were heartbroken until a local benefactor came to the rescue and offered to do the work at no charge. Bob Piotrowski was understandably suspicious of the offer of help. " I don't have any more money to pay another contractor," he said. But when he was told the work would be done at no charge, he responded, "I would really be grateful if you could do it."

The Good Samaritan company is Anthony Home Improvements in Elkins Park, PA. Why would a company with no stake in the Piotrowski loss, step in to help? Company president, Stephen Klein said, "We just hated to see them get cheated that way. We felt we had to do something."

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's office has filed a lawsuit against the contractor who allegedly took the Piotrowski's money. But the lawsuit didn't get their money back, nor get the work done they so desperately needed. Stephen Klein said, "When a contractor leaves a customer high and dry, it gives the whole industry a bad name. While we can't rescue every victim, we were touched by the Piotrowski's story."

With measuring tools in hand, Anthony Home Improvements measured the windows to be replaced and took measurements for an exterior as well as a storm door. This was the part of the work that wasn't done by the old contractor.

Over the years, the windows in the Piotrowski's home had become discolored and had lost some of their seal. They needed a total of seven double-paned windows; but the replacement windows for their home were no longer being manufactured. After receiving written approval from the development's homeowner's association, Anthony Home Improvements special ordered the replacement windows. The new double-pane, energy-efficient windows are being professionally installed by factory-trained mechanics. The new frames and glazing materials will reduce condensation. The new coating on the windows will reduce ultraviolet rays that can cause draperies and furniture to fade.

The Piotrowskis are still paying off the $6800 bank loan-- money they lost to a contractor who didn't do the work. But they say they've gained a lot more. The new windows and doors have updated the look of their home. And, they say they feel they've gained trusted friends in the people at Anthony Home Improvements. "I've always believed in the kindness of others," said Bob Piotrowski. When I look at my house now, I know, "this is proof that Anthony is a company I can trust."
