HOMEOWNER'S DREAM BECOMES A REALITY

A South Philadelphia, single mother of four who says she'd never won anything in her life, finally hit the jackpot! Mary Mills, a pediatric home care nurse won a total of $10,000 for home improvements in a contest sponsored by Anthony Home Improvements and WDAS-FM (105.3). For the last 20 years that Mills has lived in her tiny row house on South 16th Street, she dreamed of remodeling her small kitchen. Her dream of a new kitchen is about to come true.

Anthony Home Improvements will redesign Mrs. Mills' kitchen with the installation of new kitchen cabinets, countertops, and plumbing fixtures. Anthony will also install new floors in her kitchen, living room and dining room. "My house needs so much work done, and getting a new kitchen is a Godsend. I could never have afforded to do this with just my income." Mills says she's a nurse with a very demanding work schedule, and "this kitchen is going to be the best room in my house."

Mills is a deserving sweepstakes winner. Her mother died when she was only 15 years old. She married at a young age, but the marriage didn't last. Left with 4 small children to raise as a single parent, Mary Mills is a young woman filled with determination. She worked a full-time job, cared for her children and put herself through nursing school. "I would come home, start my kids with their homework and then just go upstairs and stare at the wall to relax before checking their homework and starting dinner. It's what I had to do to survive, and I'm a survivor," says Mills.

Today, Mary Mills the survivor is getting a much-needed boost in life. Anthony Home Improvement has begun work that will give her a whole new look to her kitchen, dining and living rooms.

Anthony Home Improvements' President, Stephen Klein and WDAS Community Affairs Director, Tamlin Henry, joint sponsors of the contest, looked over the work of transforming the kitchen. Klein says, "This is a way to give back to the community that's helped us become successful. It's the right thing to do for the community, and the right thing to do for our company."

Tamlin Henry added, "At WDAS our philosophy is building a stronger community and making Philadelphia a better place to live. That's why we team up with companies that can offer value and help make our diverse neighborhoods stronger."

Mary Mills has always had an upbeat personality and says she believes "God is looking out for me." And Mary is looking forward to cooking some delicious meals for her family in her brand new kitchen.
